Geography

Our Geography curriculum aims to inspire our children to learn about the world around them. We encourage children to become global citizens, exploring their place in the world, their values and their responsibilities to people, the environment and the sustainability of the planet. Our curriculum progressively builds on prior knowledge to develop their geographical vocabulary and understanding.

A Geographical Journey...

Children begin their geographical journey by developing a sense of place, scale and an understanding of human and physical geography. As they progress, children learn about the purpose of geographical fieldwork - including sketch maps - and begin to 'think like a geographer' by explaining, exploring, playing and investigating the world around them.

In LSK2, children revisit their fieldwork and map skills and use their prior knowledge to study the UK, focusing on regions, countries, landmarks and topography. Children complement their studies on the UK with further studies on location and the wider world, learning about the water cycle, geographical patterns across the world and environmental regions of Europe, Russia and America. Children 'think like geographers' by questioning, retrieving and reasoning.

As children reach UKS2, their locational knowledge deepens through a study of world locations, exploring biomes, longitude and latitude and major cities. Children advance their mapping skills, learning OS map skills, 4 and 6 figure grid references and explore the landscape around them using contour lines. Our UKS2 children analyse both human and physical geographical processes such as volcanoes, mountains and earthquakes. Children are given opportunities to 'think like geographers' through independent research, expanding and analysing.
