Spring Term
Art - Exploring Lines

In Art today, we have been exploring different types of line and the effect they might have on our art work. We split a page of our sketch book into lots of different sections and filled each space with a different style of line including curved, dashes and crosses.
Plants - Science

In Science, we have taken inspiration from famous (and the first female) botanist, Agnes Arber. We have learnt the parts of a flowering plant and the functions that they have and then used Agnes Arber's artwork to create our own version of a botany sketchbook.
Music - Recorders

We are so grateful to the U3A Recorder Ensemble from Kendal who came to perform for Grizedale Class on Wednesday. We were able to perform together too!
Science - Plants

In Science this week, we have been learning about the life cycle of flowering plants. We went outside to learn and practise some amazing actions to help our learning stick!
Can you spot each action?

Geography - UK Study

After learning about the different human and physical features of the UK, we chose some of the landmarks that interested the most and conducted our own research on them. We found out some super interesting facts and some of us are now inspired to visit the landmarks when we're older!
Science - Plants
In Science today, we explored transpiration! We found out about how water is transported through a plant and worked in teams to learn each step. We made some very clever actions to help the learning stick. After learning the process, we investigated how it might look using celery and food-colouring. We started to notice tiny changes in our celery and could see the tiny tubes in the plant had started to change colour.
Geography - UK Study

In Geography, we are learning about the UK. In today's lesson, we were thinking about the human and physical geographical features of the UK. To put us to the test, we had to sort lots of different landmarks into different groups and think about what it was that made us make our decisions.
Science - Plants

In our Science lessons, we have been trying to answer the question "What happens when a plant doesn't get everything it needs to grow and thrive?" This week, our investigation came to an end after two of our plants were looking very dehydrated. We found out that our basil plants could survive without much water but that they definitely needed light! Instead of totally concluding our investigation, we have started a new one and are going to find out if we can help our plants to grow again by giving them everything they need.
Schools 2041
Grizedale Class have started their Schools 2041 project. We are so excited to be learning about Antarctica and are very keen to learn about why it is such a special wilderness.
We started our project by creating beautiful front covers for our project book and then found about Olive and her trip to Antarctica. We worked out that it took Olive nearly three full days to travel there! Miss Taylor was very surprised at how many children in Grizedale Class said that they would be brave enough to be in the freezing temperatures of Antarctica!
"The 2041 School charity has a clear aim; to recruit pupils, teachers and schools and give them a special mission – to become Champions of Antarctica and a 2041 School. 2041 School wants young children to understand the need, and the desire, to protect one of the last great remaining wildernesses on Earth."
Learning Powers!

Science - Plants

"Plants all need the same things to grow and thrive," Is that sometimes, always or never true? Grizedale Class examined different plants and their plant care to find an answer to this question. We used a table to compare the conditions that plants needed to survive and found out that even though the plants may need different amounts of each element, they all needed them in order to thrive,
In English, we have been reading and watching character descriptions of Cruella De Vil and using dictionaries to decide which vocabulary we can use to describe her the best. We worked as a class using zones of relevance to define and use 21 different words and then decided which we wanted to use to describe Cruella. We think she is surly, bad-tempered, devious and cunning!
Science - Plants

In Science, we have started learning about plants. In our first lesson, we set up an investigation to find out what would happen if we didn't give a plant one of the things we learnt they needed to thrive. We have a control plant which we are nurturing and have four other plants which are lacking water, air, temperature or light. After making predictions and monitoring our plants for a week, we made our first Scientific observation of each plant.
We were shocked how quickly the plants have changed and started to wilt. So far, the plants are surviving but looking very different to our control plant.
Comic Book Kev Workshop

We had lots of fun during our comic book workshop with Comic Kev. We worked together to create our very own Grizedale Class Comic!
Maths - 3D Shape

In our Shape, Space and Measure lessons with Mrs Taylor we have been exploring the properties of 3D shapes by making them! We used toothpicks and Bluetac to construct our own versions of different 3D shapes and then worked together to discuss the properties.
Computing - Stop-frame Animation

We had SUCH a brilliant afternoon for our Animation Workshop with Michael from Animation Nation. We learnt so much about the tricks of the trade of animation and produced some really fun stop-frame animations in our pairs or groups. Please see our school videos page for the finished work!
History - Why do we still remember Boudicca today?
To assess our learning in History, Miss Taylor challenged us to showcase our knowledge of Boudicca in any way we wanted to. We worked independently using our History books, knowledge notes and knowledge organisers to create some FANTASTIC pieces of work including newspapers, reports, scrolls and stories!
PE - Cheerleading

We are loving our weekly cheerleading lessons and have been learning how to correctly lift and be lifted to add to our full routine. We learnt that the person who gets lifted is called a flyer and it is very important that they trust their team, keep their arms nice and straight and land with soft feet.
History - Why do we still remember Boudicca today?
After conducting some source analysis of portraits of Boudicca and reviewing some different text about her (some written by the Romans and some written by the Celts), we thought about how it is really tricky to get an accurate impression of somebody from the past because of bias. We decided to use our own knowledge to create a one page profile of our own impressions of Boudicca. We think she is loyal, brave, trustworthy and resilient!
English - The Spider and The Fly

We have been transferring our knowledge of the Spider and the Fly into different genres of writing. After writing a letter in response to the Spider after receiving a very sinister invitation, we are now moving onto diary entries as the characters from the poem. Today, we have created a toolkit for a diary entry and tested it out against a diary entry written by the Fly!
We have absolutely loved our History unit all about Boudicca. In every lesson, we have been listening to this super fun song all about Boudicca to keep our learning sticky and to prompt some brilliant discussions.
Art - Storytelling Through Drawing
After creating our one page profiles of a character of our choice from James and the Giant Peach, we worked very hard to create a clay replica of them. We worked very hard on our scale and proportion and it certainly paid off!
PE - Cheerleading

Grizedale class loved our first Cheerleading lesson today with our special cheerleading coach. We did so well that next week we will be attempting some lifts!
Art - Telling Stories Through Drawing and Making
In Art, we have been looking at how artists make stories come to life with their work. To start our unit, we have been studying Quentin Blake and his style of drawing. We took part in a guided draw of Willy Wonka and were so impressed with how quickly Quentin draws. We thought about how he celebrates uniqueness, imperfection and creativity in his art.
